If your dog is about to have dental surgery, you may be anxious. This is normal for pet owners. After all, you want to make sure that your pet is getting the best possible care before, during, and after surgery.

However, if you are a new pet owner you may not be sure about exactly how to take care of your pet once the surgery is complete. This can leave you feeling even more anxious than you should. The only way to relieve this anxiety is by getting the knowledge you need about how to take care of your dog after the surgery. The following is a guideline you can use.

Rest Is Critical

One of the most important things your dog will need to have after surgery is rest. You need to prepare a spot for them in your home that's warm and comfortable. Remember that they will most likely be given an anesthetic during the dental procedure. Most pets will take a day or two to recover.

Don't be alarmed if your pet seems unusually drowsy and doesn't want anything to eat. You should gradually see this drowsiness decrease after a day has passed. If you do not see an improvement, call your vet.

Understand the Medication

During the recovery process, you must give your dog any antibiotics or pain relievers your vet has prescribed. If there's anything about the medication you are not sure about, do not stay quiet. Ask your vet about it before you leave.

Sometimes pets do not want to take their pain reliever or antibiotic. You will need to call your vet and tell them the situation. They will help you to come up with a solution for the issue. Antibiotics are especially important because they will help to prevent infection in the area of the surgery.

Feeding Your Pet

It is okay for you to feed your pet after surgery but you will usually be asked to give your dog smaller portions. Your pet will not be able to eat harder food for a few days. It is often better to give your dog some softer canned food while they recover from oral surgery.

Some dogs may not be able to manage canned food either. It may be best to stick with a liquid diet for your pet. Your vet can make some suggestions to assist you. It is critical that your dog eats to regain their energy.
